Portugal marked its National Day at Expo 2025 Osaka on 5 May with a programme that highlighted music, art, architecture and the cultural identity of the Portuguese language. The date coincided with two symbolic occasions: the World Portuguese Language Day, established by UNESCO, and Children's Day, celebrated in Japan.

At a time when the world comes together under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, Portugal presented a diverse programme that reflected its cultural values, creativity and commitment to sustainability.

UMI, the Portuguese mascot, alongside the restaurant and gift shop, has become a must-see highlights for those looking to take home a little piece of Portugal. Visitor no. 200,000 came on May 3rd.

Cryptomeria: the sustainable inspiration behind the Portugal Pavilion uniforms

The uniforms for the Portugal Pavilion team at Expo 2025 Osaka, designed by Filipe Augusto and Miguel Flor (ModaPortugal), were inspired by Japanese cryptomeria, a tree of great ecological and economic value that unites Portugal and Japan. Introduced in the Azores in the 19th century, this sustainable wood stands out for its durability and resistance and is used in construction, furniture and even surfboards.

Its timelessness and commitment to sustainability are reflected in the uniforms, which combine craftsmanship and technology, eco-friendly materials and prints inspired by natural wood and the traditional technique of yakisugi.
